Ah, yes, the good old dress code question. Always fun. To us, it is important that you are here, not how. Let’s put it like Nirvana (or, more precisely, the late Kurt Cobain) did: Come as you are. Honestly. Now, if you put a gun to our heads (“And I swear that I don’t have a gun”) and tell us that you never heard about Nirvana (shame on you), Nirvana is before your time, out of your context, or the hint really does not stick: Dress Smart Casual.

Die gute, alte Dress Code-Frage. Wir freuen uns darüber, dass Ihr hier sein werdet, nicht wie. Nirvana (bzw. Kurt Cobain selig) hat das ganz gut in Worte gefasst: Come as you are. Wirklich. Wenn Ihr jetzt sagt “Nirvana, nie gehört” (schlimm genug), “Nirvana, lange vor meiner Zeit”, “Nir-was?”, oder den Zaunpfahl auch mit der Lupe nicht seht und uns die Pistole auf die Brust setzen würdet: Kommt Smart Casual.

The next topic of concern. Gifts. Look, we are in the lucky situation to have a very good and stable income, we have everything we need for our flat, and we do not need stuff or money. Gift us your presence, and please take this literally. Do something good for you or the world with your money.

Noch so eine Sache. Unser Leben stellt sich ja folgendermaßen dar: Wir haben ein wirklich gutes und stabiles Auskommen. Wir haben eine Wohnung, für die wir alles haben, was wir brauchen. Schenkt uns Eure Anwesenheit und macht mit Eurem Geld etwas Gutes für Euch oder für die Welt. Ehrlich.

Do not feel obligated to come up with some fancy game. We do not expect anything, heck, we are truly happy if there are no games. If you would like to give a speech, sure thing! Just do it spontanously (but please give priority to our parents 🙂 ).

Wir sagen es mal so: Ihr müsst Euch keine Spiele überlegen – im Gegenteil: Wir freuen uns auch wirklich ohne Spiele. Wenn Ihr eine Rede halten wollt, passt das natürlich immer, lasst aber den Eltern den Vortritt 🙂

There’s a tradition where people throw rice or other things when the newlyweds leave the registry office. However, the authorities aren’t too fond of rice (not even cooked!), and we’re not keen on pumpkins (they hurt!). In short: Please don’t throw anything, let’s just enjoy a glass of champagne instead 😊

Es gibt diesen Brauch, dass man Reis oder andere Dinge wirft, wenn das Brautpaar das Standesamt verlässt. Reis mag die Behörde nicht (auch nicht gekocht), Kürbisse mögen wir nicht (tut weh). Zusammengefasst: Werft nichts, lasst uns lieber einfach einen Sekt trinken 😉

You say: “Noone throws pumpkins at weddings!” That’s actually most probably true. Funny thought, though.

Vielleicht denkst Du: “Niemand wirft bei einer Hochzeit Kürbisse!” Das stimmt vermutlich, die Vorstellung ist trotzdem lustig.

We will be in a lecture hall. Lecture halls usually feature mediocre and over-aged projectors, mic, and sound. Together with something like Spotify, this should work.

Wir sind in einem Hörsaal einer öffentlichen Universität in Deutschland. Da gibt es die feinste Ausstattung, vom alten, lichtschwachen Beamer zum großartigen Soundsystem. Zusammen mit Spotify und den richtigen Nichten und Neffen sollte das doch funktionieren.
